Excerpts from an interview with Max Lim, big wave surfer and the original builder/owner of the Big Surf.
Interviewer: Is that really you in those pictures?
Max Lim: I'm afraid so. Crazy huh?
Interviewer: Did the Big Surf's name have anything to do with your career?
Max Lim:Well, I've surfed Waikiki and the Big Surf on the North Shore for most of my life. So when I built my first hotel, I decided to name it after what I loved the best: the Big Surf (laughter).

Seriously, I wanted a hotel economical enough so that everyone could come to Hawaii, not just rich people, but anyone, surfers, beach bums, students, families on a budget, any guy or gal looking for paradise. Truth is, you won't find thirty foot waves in Waikiki. But I strongly advise you to try your hand at Waikiki's three -footers and not the two and a half stories of pure, natural wave power of the North Shore.
Here are some cool surf movies (AVI).
